In 1995, I participated in a drawing competition at my primary school in the 4th Grade. It was about drawing something that reflects nature. Since my hometown was close to a 50-km stretch of forest, I recollected the mountains, waterfalls, birds, trees and tribal community and presented everything on a drawing sheet. It wasn’t a perfect illustration; however, I felt satisfied with the result.
A few days later, my Father received a certificate from my school principal, and he was proud of my achievement. Not only did he appreciate my work, but he also encouraged me to continue drawing more. I was sent to a nearby painter who taught me how to portray birds and animals with a pencil and use pencil strikes more effectively.

I realized that what started as a competition soon became a hobby, and I understand that encouragement plays a vital role in one’s life. As I grew up, my friends recognized my talent and often approached me to draw something for them. As I practiced more, I became better at it. This talent eventually helped me land an IT job when one of the HR panel members asked me to sketch his live portrait in the last round of my job interview in 2006.

Looking forward, I will try to identify my children’s hidden aptitudes and encourage them to continue learning by giving them as much importance as the other curriculum subjects.
